      Description

In the "golden image" workflow, we first dd the SD card to the workstation and then generate a Mender Artifact from it (see the section on Copy the modified image to your workstation). This takes extra time/waiting and requires quite a bit of extra disk space (same as entire SD card, regardless if it is fully used or not). We should eliminate this step by supporting SD card (e.g. /dev/mmcblk0) as input in addition to raw/mender disk images.

      User value (why)

      • Save time & effort every time when generating Mender Artifacts in the golden image workflow
      • Lower disk space requirements (potential 10s of GB saved per Artifact generation)

      Size (SP)

      • TBD

      Acceptance criteria

      • When a .img or .sdimg file is taken as input in from-raw-disk-image and mender-disk-image-to-artifact, respectively, a SD card device (e.g. /dev/mmcblk0) is also supported as input (e.g. --raw-disk-image /dev/mmcblk0)
      • This also works from within the docker container environment (as we use --privileged to start the container it can read /dev/mmcblk0)
