      Description

The network setup for a physical demo environment is quite cumbersome with Mender, especially if prebuilt demo images are being used; you have to edit /etc/host in the image or device to make it resolve the Mender server on your local network.

This is somewhat annoying for our demo environment, but it also makes it difficult to share demo images (which could be a nice next step for Mender Hub Board Integrations, which can then grow into a community & partner repository).

There are some service discovery libraries available for this purpose, like Avahi, Bonjour, even creating some homegrown multicast. Potentially one of these can be running as part of the Mender demo server to respond to clients.

      User value (why)

      • Easier evaluation/getting started with Mender
      • Enable community and partners to create reusable prebuilt images

      Acceptance criteria

      • If a Mender demo server is set up a client on the same network automatically requests to join this server, regardless of its IP address
      • There is a solution for using Hosted Mender zeroconf as well (tenant token)
      • Mender Hub Board Integrations template updated to use zeroconf for images
